The factor we are talking about is design changes. This can be anything from superficial visual tweaks to major changes in how the product works or is used.<\/p>\n\n

We\u2019re not talking small increases in cost here, either, as changes after the design is frozen and production tooling has been created can be thousands of times more expensive than making a change in the concept stage of the product\u2019s development.<\/p>\n\n

Impact on Time to Market of Late-Stage Design Changes<\/h2>\n\n

In addition to the cost implications, the later a design change occurs, the more work has to be redone. The change request could impact other aspects of the medical device too, meaning those aspects will also have to be reworked.<\/p>\n\n

For example, a component might have to be redesigned to facilitate the design change but redesigning this component might also necessitate the redesigning of other components. This adds time to the development process.<\/p>\n\n
