It runs until 2027, but there is a replacement Horizon Europe 2028 &#8211; 2034 proposal currently in consultation with a \u20ac175 billion budget.\r\n\r\nThe primary programs offering funding for the development of new medical devices include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>European Innovation Council (EIC) grants<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Cluster 1: Health collaborative projects<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The Innovative Health Initiative<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>European Innovation Council (EIC) Grants<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThere are <a href=\"https:\/\/eic.ec.europa.eu\/eic-funding-opportunities_en\">four main grants<\/a> available from this program tailored to different stages of innovation:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>EIC Pathfinder \u2013 suitable for early-stage (TRL 1-4) R&amp;D projects. Grants of up to \u20ac4 million are available.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>EIC Transition \u2013 suitable for mid-stage (TRL 3-6) project. Grants of up to \u20ac2.5 million are available for technology validation and business case development.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>EIC Pre-Accelerator \u2013 suitable for projects at TRL 4-6. Grants of up to \u20ac0.5 million are available to support technology, business, and investment readiness.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>EIC Accelerator \u2013 suitable for scale-up projects (TRL 6-8). Both grants (up to \u20ac2.5 million) and equity investments (up to \u20ac10 million) are available. Note that UK companies are only eligible to apply for the grant component.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>Cluster 1: Health Collaborative Projects<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/funding-programmes-and-open-calls\/horizon-europe\/cluster-1-health_en\">Horizon Europe&#8217;s Pillar 2 health cluster<\/a> aims to improve and protect the health and well-being of EU citizens. Funding is available for collaborative projects where SMEs can work with universities, research organizations, and similar entities to develop new medical devices.\r\n\r\n<strong>The Innovative Health Initiative<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihi.europa.eu\/\">Innovative Health Initiative (IHI)<\/a> is another source of funding. It is a public-private partnership under Horizon Europe jointly funded by the EU and the life sciences industry. The IHI helps establish and support collaboration across sectors to develop medical devices and other health-related innovations. Funding is awarded through specific calls for proposals that are published on the IHI website.\r\n<h4>EU4Health<\/h4>\r\nSeparate from Horizon Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ec.europa.eu\/funding\/eu4health-programme-2021-2027-vision-healthier-european-union_en\">EU4Health<\/a> is the EU&#8217;s funding program focused on priorities that include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Health crisis preparedness in the EU<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Health promotion and disease prevention<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Health systems and the healthcare workforce<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nFunding opportunities under EU4Health are published as calls for proposals or calls for tenders on the <a href=\"https:\/\/hadea.ec.europa.eu\/calls-proposals_en\">Health and Digital Executive Agency&#8217;s website<\/a>.\r\n<h4>Eurostars<\/h4>\r\nEurostars is a funding program from EUREKA, an intergovernmental organization that supports market-driven R&amp;D and innovation. Its funding comes from public bodies of its member countries. There are 47 member countries, including all 27 EU countries.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekanetwork.org\/programmes-and-calls\/eurostars\/\">Funding is available<\/a> for SME-led, market-driven medical device development projects for R&amp;D activities typically up to TRL 6. The amount and type of funding available are determined by the national bodies within the Eurostars network.\r\n<h4>InvestEU<\/h4>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/investeu.europa.eu\/investeu-programme\/investeu-fund\/how-get-financing_en\">InvestEU<\/a> doesn&#8217;t directly provide financial support for medical device projects and SMEs. Instead, it offers public guarantees to help SMEs secure investment from private and institutional sources.\u00a0 An example is the French hospital and hygiene solution provider Germitec. It <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/sv\/ip_23_5761\">secured a \u20ac25 million investment<\/a> from the European Investment Bank (EIB) in 2023 that was underpinned by an InvestEU guarantee.\r\n<h3>Country-Specific Grant Funding Sources<\/h3>\r\n<h4>Ireland<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enterprise-ireland.com\/en\/supports\/funding-and-grants\">Enterprise Ireland<\/a> \u2013 offers equity investments and tailored grants. Program examples include the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.gov.ie\/en\/what-we-do\/innovation-research-development\/disruptive-technologies-innovation-fund\/\">Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF),<\/a> which publishes regular funding proposal calls.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4>United Kingdom<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/what-we-do\/browse-our-areas-of-investment-and-support\/biomedical-catalyst\/\">Innovate UK<\/a> \u2013 grants and other supports for research and innovation via a range of investment areas. This includes the Biomedical Catalyst, which supports health technology projects with accelerator grants, industry-led R&amp;D grants, and investor partnerships.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nihr.ac.uk\/research-funding\/funding-programmes\">National Institute for Health and Care Research<\/a> \u2013 offers a range of funding opportunities to support research in health, care, and public health. This includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nihr.ac.uk\/research-funding\/funding-programmes\/invention-for-innovation\">the Invention for Innovation (i4i) programme<\/a> that supports research for medical device projects.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4>France<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bpifrance.com\/products\/biotech-and-medtech-vc-funds\/\">Bpifrance<\/a> \u2013 offers grants, loans, and public VC, including specific biotechnology and medical device VC funds.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4>Germany<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zim.de\/ZIM\/Navigation\/DE\/Meta\/Englisch\/englisch.html\">Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand (ZIM)<\/a> \u2013 national R&amp;D grants for SMEs.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4>Netherlands<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/english.rvo.nl\/health-wellness-and-care\">Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO)<\/a> \u2013 offers support, including financial support, for projects that contribute to good health.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4>Sweden<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vinnova.se\/en\/apply-for-funding\/find-the-right-funding\/\">Swedish Innovation Agency (Vinnova)<\/a> \u2013 regularly publishes specific funding opportunities, including for medical device development projects.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4>Denmark<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/innovationsfonden.dk\/en\/programmes\">Innovation Fund Denmark (Innovationsfonden)<\/a> \u2013 supports research and innovation projects via a range of programs.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eifo.dk\/\">Danish Export and Investment Fund (EIFO)<\/a> \u2013 co-financing solutions for Danish companies.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4>Norway<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.innovasjonnorge.no\/article\/startups\">Innovation Norway<\/a> \u2013 offers a range of supports for start-up companies, including grants and loans.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forskningsradet.no\/en\/call-for-proposals\/\">The Research Council of Norway<\/a> \u2013 provides R&amp;D funding through regular calls for proposals.
